What fairytale? The<a href=\"https:\/\/superversivesf.com\/2018\/02\/23\/defending-wood-perilous-part-two-wood-perilous\/\"> third part<\/a> discusses what it is about fairy tales that make them perilous to the forces of modernity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Now, without further ado: <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Part Four:\u00a0\u00a0<em>A Disgrace to the Forces of Evil!<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Heroism is so deadly to the Degenerati [those partaking in the degenerate forces of modernity] that even villains cannot be majestic. In many of these stories, only the bad and tawdry things were exalted. True villainy, of the majestic kind, was also banished.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Don\u2019t believe me?<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_216\" style=\"width: 471px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216\" class=\"wp-image-216\" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/malificent-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"465\" height=\"295\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-216\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Notice how one is snide and confident, while the other looks teary-eyed and weak.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">If you search for Malificent, both these ladies show up, but only the original version of Malificent shows up if you search for one of her most famous quotes: <em>\u201c<\/em>Now<em>\u00a0shall\u00a0<\/em>you<em>\u00a0deal with\u00a0<\/em>ME,\u00a0<em>O Prince,<\/em>\u00a0a<em>nd all the powers of Hell!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">There\u2019s a reason for that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Both these women may share the same malicious and magnificent name, but only one of them deserves it.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_211\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-211\" class=\"wp-image-211 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Doom-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"357\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Victor Von Doom does not approve.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">To those of us whose eyes are not blinded by the putrid bile that fills the eyes of the Degenerati, villainy seems, well, vile. An impressive bad guy is still a bad guy, and bad guys are bad. And so we see them, whether they are wimpy villains or majestic villains OF DOOM!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">What do I mean by majestic? Imagine an enormous, black, basalt fortress stretching as far as the eye can see. It is vast and impregnable, with arrow slits and crenelations. And atop those, crenelations, a man stands calm, imperious, implacable&#8211;and set upon your destruction. Nothing sways him. Nothing disturbs him. He speaks a word and a hundred, thousand, million minions all jump into action to obey him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Those of us not yet blinded by darkness often prefer our villains majestic. But to those whose hearts have been corrupted, majesty itself is despised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Why? Because the more impressive the villains, the more impressive the hero who defeats him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In real fairy tales, both the hero and the villain can be majestic. In the twisted modern stories, no one is majestic. The heroes are not brave and glorious, and the villains are not fierce and awe-inspiring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In fact, nothing is awe-inspiring at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">When Canadian psychologist and professor Jordan Peterson lectures about the nature of stories, he often returns to the story of <em>Pinocchio<\/em>. He sees Pinocchio\u2019s transformation from doll to real boy as a symbol of the transformation we all yearn to go through, but this is not the part of the story he talks about the most. What stands out to him is the opening, in which a sweet and good man, who is kind to others, looks up at a star and yearns for a son.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_213\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213\" class=\"wp-image-213 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/geppetto-wish-300x224.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"198\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Geppetto and Figaro wishing upon a star.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">More than once, he has paused to emphasize how good a person Geppetto is in the tale, how kind and generous and unselfish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In the graphic novel series <em>Fables<\/em>, fairytale beings flooded into our world, fleeing some dire danger in their own. As they arrived, they were clearly tainted by our air, because by the time they reached the city the more noble characters had become cads and the Big Bad Wolf had become a hero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">After a time, however, the characters regrouped and decided to try to find out what was happening back home. One of the questions that reverberated throughout this period was: who was behind the terrible events in their home world?<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_212\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212\" class=\"wp-image-212 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/von-r-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/von-r-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/von-r-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/von-r.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Von Rothbart &#8212; wicked, conniving, and he can dance!<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The author of <em>Fables<\/em> had many impressive villains to choose from. Might it be the insidious <strong>Von Rothbart<\/strong> whose cunningly disguises his daughter Odile as the lovely Odette in order to beguile the prince and drive Odette to her death?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Or <strong>the witch<\/strong> from Hansel and Gretle who cackles while she <em>eats children<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Might it be the<strong> wicked fairy<\/strong> from Sleeping Beauty, whom Disney made so impressive that she can call upon all the powers of Hell?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Or the ice-cold <strong>Snow Queen<\/strong> who can, with a shard of her mirror, turn a boy\u2019s heart to ice?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">OR the <strong>Pied Piper<\/strong>, who steals the town\u2019s children when they won\u2019t pay him for ridding them of rats?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Or the <strong>Rat King<\/strong> himself, the vile three-headed opponent of the Nutcracker prince?<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_214\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214\" class=\"wp-image-214 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Geppetto.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"215\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Evil Geppetto and his evil&#8230;night cap?<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">He might have chosen any of these to be the villain worthy of his many heroes and heroine, but he didn\u2019t. The villain behind the calamity in Fables was an evil\u2026Geppetto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">It is not enough to have an evil snow queen or rat king, the good little man who was kind and loving must be warped beyond recognition into something vile, lest the villain be anyone who we might accidentally admire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">The same thing happened in Disney\u2019s <em>Maleficent<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Disney cartoons feature many fine villains, but none stand out for their force and majesty as much as Malificent, the wicked fairy who is so angry that she has been slighted at a christening that she curses the family and tries to kill the child.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_215\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215\" class=\"wp-image-215 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maleficent-empireonline-com1-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maleficent-empireonline-com1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/maleficent-empireonline-com1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-215\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em> \u00a0&#8220;And all the powers of Hell!&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Malificent is impressive. She is funny. She curses an innocent child, just because she is miffed. When, sixteen years later, she leanrs that her minions, goblins and gargoyls,\u00a0 are still looking in cradles for a missing baby&#8211; instead of a young lady who has grown up&#8211;Malificent utters her eerie, silvery, laugh. Then she blasts them with a lightning bolt from her magic wand and declares:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>\u201cOh, they&#8217;re hopeless. A disgrace to the forces of evil!\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">But Malificent herself is no disgrace. When it comes time to fight the prince she turns into a gigantic dragon and calls up on the most infernal forces of all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">This gives her a majesty that fits with the evil magnificence of her name. She was spectacular in her villainy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Too spectacular for the Degenerati, apparently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In the original<em> Sleeping Beauty \u2013<\/em>\u00a0in some ways the most beautiful of all the Disney cartoons \u2013 the backdrops were done by a well-known painter. ( I used to sell his works when I worked at a gallery.) \u2013 Malificent curses king Stephan, a man who is both a kind king and a loving husband and father. His only crime is that he left the evil fairy off his guest list. He is good, and he is innocent. The horror that befalls his nation is appalling, and he is undeserving of this terrible fate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_217\" style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-217\" class=\"wp-image-217\" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rat-300x234.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rat-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/rat.png 563w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Rat King &#8212; formidable and has three heads!<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In the recent movie about a being who happens to have a similar look and name to our magnificent villainess, the main character, Faux-Malificent, is not majestic.\u00a0 She is weak and innocent. She falls in love with a man, and this dastardly individual betrays her sweet love and cuts off her wings, leaving her bereft, a victim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">How sad. How tragic. What a victim she is. No wonder she grew up to be such a&#8230;unpleasant fairy creature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In the movie, that man is\u2026the future King Stephan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">It is Geppetto all over again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Big-hearted Geppetto cannot be kindly, he has to be an evil mastermind. Good-hearted King Stephan cannot be innocent, he has to be the cad who screwed over the future villainess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">In modern stories, good men become cads and creeps so that the bad people, like\u00a0Malificent and the Big Bad Wolf*, can be misunderstood, pathetic.\u00a0\u00a0What effect do these changes have on the story? They mitigate the wickedness. If the villain is now a victim, then the villainy is now justified. &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t her fault. She was abused first.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Suddenly, her blackness&#8230;is not so black.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">*\u00a0(Okay, I actually like Big Bad. He\u2019s my favorite <em>Fable<\/em> character, but I like him because he\u2019s a noir detective type like Sam Spade. He has nothing in common with the character from the fairy tales who eats grandmothers and pigs.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Conversely, making the innocent man into the villain, as with Geppetto and King Stephan, sullies the goodness of the character &#8212;<em> and of the original work!\u00a0<\/em>The original story now seems less realistic, less signficant, less important, especially to members of the audience who come upon the modern version first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Suddenly the purity of the innocent is stained; the whiteness is no longer so white.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The Degenerati mitigate the bad and lower the good They try to &#8220;level the playing field,&#8221; make everything flat and uninteresting. They pretend good is bad, and bad is&#8230;not so bad.\u00a0All majesty is removed from the characters, and without majesty, there is no awe.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_218\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218\" class=\"wp-image-218 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/snow-1-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/snow-1-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/snow-1-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/snow-1-1024x748.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.superversivesf.com\/inklings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/snow-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>The awesomeness that is the Snow Queen<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Because we can\u2019t have awe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">It might accidentally remind someone of the <em>Source of All Awe.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>And that, folks, seems to be<em> \u2013<\/em>\u00a0strange as this may seem<em> \u2013<\/em>\u00a0the real issue. Noble qualities, even in villains, are still noble qualities. And modern stories don\u2019t want those. They want scum, and they want victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">Scum and victims are not <em>perilous<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">And if there is no\u00a0<em>peril<\/em>, then there can be no <em>heroism<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><em>Next Up: Our Conclusion: The Secret of the Perilous Wood<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part One: We Live in a Fairytale\u00a0 Part Two: Descent into Darkness\u00a0 \u00a0 Part Three: The Wood that is Perilous &nbsp; &nbsp; You live in a fairy tale.
