It has Irish roots\u2026<\/h2>\n

First established as a magical home-school in the early 1600s,\u00a0Ilvermorny<\/a>\u00a0was named for the cottage where its co-founder,\u00a0Isolt Sayre<\/a>, spent her early childhood in County Kerry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although not a happy childhood \u2013 her\u00a0pure-blood<\/a>\u00a0obsessed\u00a0Aunt Gormlaith<\/a>kidnapped Isolt after murdering her pro-Muggle mother and father \u2013 her early years, at least, were idyllic. After travelling to America, Isolt chose to remember them in numerous ways. The name Ilvermorny was one, calling her\u00a0Pukwudgie<\/a>\u00a0companion after her father was another, and Ilvermorny\u2019s symbol \u2013 the Gordian Knot \u2013 was a third. Isolt wove the Knot, based on an old brooch of her mothers\u2019, into both Ilvermorny\u2019s Sorting Ceremony and the clasp that fastens students\u2019 robes.<\/span><\/p>\n

So it was that Ilvermorny\u2019s four founders \u2013 Isolt, James and their first students, Webster and Chadwick \u2013 divided their own school. Each named a house after their favourite magical creature:\u00a0Horned Serpent<\/a>\u00a0(Isolt),\u00a0Wampus<\/a>\u00a0(Webster),\u00a0Thunderbird<\/a>(Chadwick) and\u00a0Pukwudgie<\/a>\u00a0(James). As J.K. Rowling explains:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018It is sometimes said of the Ilvermorny houses that they represent the whole witch or wizard: the mind is represented by Horned Serpent; the body, Wampus; the heart, Pukwudgie and the soul, Thunderbird. Others say that Horned Serpent favours scholars, Wampus, warriors, Pukwudgie, healers and Thunderbird, adventurers.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n
