Silver Empire To Relase Declan Finn’s A Pius Man

Before Declan Finn became known as the Dragon Award nominated vampire writer, he wrote a thriller series that’s been described as “The Da Vinci Code — but not heretical.”  The first book in that series is going to be released on July 1 and looks to be quite Superversive.

The description from Silver Empire:

As the head of Vatican security, Giovanni Figlia must protect a new, African Pope who courts controversy every other day. The Pope’s latest project is to make Pius XII, “Hitler’s Pope,” a saint. Things haven’t gotten better since the Pope employed American mercenary Sean Ryan.

Then a body fell onto the Vatican doorstep.

The book is currently available for pre-order directly from the publisher here and will be on Amazon soon.

From the author of DEMONSOULED and THE GHOSTS, here is a new epic fantasy of high adventure, heroism, and daring deeds.

A thousand years ago, the last grandson of Arthur Pendragon led the survivors of Britain through a magical gate to a new world, a world of magic and high elves, of orcs and kobolds and stranger, darker creatures. Now the descendants of the exiles rule a mighty kingdom, peaceful and prosperous under the rule of the High King.

But a shadow threatens to devour the kingdom.

RIDMARK ARBAN was once a Swordbearer, a knight of renown. Now he is a branded outcast, stripped of his sword, and despised as a traitor.

But he alone sees the danger to come.

CALLIANDE awakens in the darkness, her memories gone, and creatures of terrible power hunting her.

For she alone holds the secret that can save the world…or destroy it utterly.

The secret of the Frostborn.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Standing over six feet tall, Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.

He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER’S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works.

Signal Boost: Prospero’s Children trilogy is FINALLY live!

Some of you may have read my original Writer’s Odyssey post, about the long, tangled process of publishing my first series. The series came out from Tor, the first book appearing in 2009.

Alas, the saga does not end there. The original series, then called Prospero’s Daughter, was released with covers that were pretty, but which had very little to do with the book and, worse, gave a wrong impression of what the books are like. My favorite quote on this subject comes from successful indie author Jonathan Moeller, who perfectly encapsulated the impression given by the original covers when he wrote in a review of this series:

I have to admit, the books are not all what I expected. For some reason, I had it in my head that they would be sort of ethereal and bloodless – a woman wasting away in a loveless arranged marriage while pining for the Elf King, that sort of thing. I am pleased to report that I was quite completely wrong. Instead, PROSPERO’S DAUGHTER is a combination between a detective novel and Warhammer 40k.

Perhaps due to this wrong packaging, the books did not sell well. (My editor felt it was the covers that harmed the series. He may have been right, because, years later, I still had people walking up to me and saying how much they enjoyed the first book and would the second book ever come out?–which means they did not see it when it came out with its original cover, which was neither accurate nor interesting to the eye.) Finally, I was able to regain the rights and try again.

This time, the books are coming out from the dynamic and up-and-coming Wordfire Press. The covers are by the same cover artist who does my Books of Unexpected Enlightenment series, Dan Lawlis. Before becoming a commercial artist, Dan used to draw for DC and Marvel.

Originally, I wanted to call the trilogy Prospero’s Children–to emphasize that, while the book is from Miranda’s point of view, the story is about the whole family and, in particular, the relationship between the siblings–Prospero’s children. Tor changed the series title to Prospero’s Daughter so as to include it in a line they called Women in Fantasy. (I was told that they would make an exception and put the series in this line, even though there were no sex scenes.) When Wordfire picked up the trilogy, they graciously agreed to restore the original series title.

So, it is with great delight, that I announce that the Prospero’s Children trilogy is available again…and with covers that reflect the characters and stories!

Shakespeare meets Dante as Miranda races to gather her siblings and rescue her father…from Hell.

Prospero, the exiled sorcerer made famous in William Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, has endured throughout many centuries. His daughter Miranda runs the family business—Prospero, Inc.—so smoothly that most of modern humanity has no idea that the Prosperos’ magic has protected Earth from repeated disasters. But old Prospero himself has been kidnapped by demons from Hell, and Miranda, aided by her estranged siblings, has followed her father into the depths of the underworld to save him from a certain doom at the hands of vengeful demons.

Time is running out for Miranda, and for the great magician himself, as they battle against the most terrifying forces of the Pit.

“No ordinary urban fantasy, but a treasure trove of nifty ideas and intriguing revelations.”—Publisher’s Weekly on Prospero Lost

Interview with Danielle Ackley-McPhail and Signal Boost for The Awakened Modern

An interview with Danielle McPhail, publisher and co-founder of eSpec Books, with husband Mike McPhail and Greg Schauer, www.especbooks.com.

Please tell us about your current project.

DM: The Awakened Modern is the third anthology set in The Awakened Role-Playing universe created by Hal Greenberg. In the game, the story takes place on a fantasy world with two moons. The influence of the second moon triggers special abilities in a portion of the population when they hit their maturity at age 19. In Awakened Modern, the sudden appearance of this second moon in Earth’s sky awakens similar latent abilities in humanity…a link to a familiar, control of the elements, and so much more becomes possible. And because the moon’s influence is new, the abilities appear in adults of any age because the abilities were latent.

What is the predominant theme of Awakened Modern?

In the earlier anthologies you had people dealing with new abilities, but the concept was something expected to them. It was understood that at a certain age abilities might appear and those existing in this world.

In Awakened Modern, the appearance of the moon and the sudden abilities awakened represent a drastic shift in reality so you have characters that must discover the bounds of their abilities while dealing with the rest of humanity panicking because of the unexpected changes and the division between “us” and “them” in regards to those who discover they have developed abilities.

Who can we look forward to seeing in the collection?

The collection, edited by Hal Greenberg and Greg Schauer, will feature stories by Ed Greenwood, James Chambers, Drew Bittner, Torah Cottrill, Ty Johnston, Walt Ciechanowski, Erik Scott de Bie, Hal Greenberg and Ken Shannon, with potential bonus stories by Darren W. Pearce, James M. Ward, and Richard Lee Byers.

Some of the authors involved are veterans of The Awakened universe, having appeared in The Awakened or The Awakened II, others are veteran eSpec authors, contributing to one or more of the anthologies we have done previously.

Where can we get the book?

Right now we are funding the book through Kickstarter. The campaign has already met its funding goal and we have three weeks left to reach some pretty great stretch goals. The campaign URL is http://tiny.cc/AwakenedModern. The campaign ends at the end of May.

Once the book goes to press it will be available on line through most third-party book sites, by special order through most brick-and-mortar book stores, and at any convention eSpec Books is represented at.

The Awakened Modern!

When a second moon appears in Earth’s sky, life will never be the same as people all over the world find themselves Awakened.

Signal Boost: A Doctor To Dragons

New from Superversive Press!  Yes, that’s us! We have a wonderful new book out for your reading pleasure!

The Dark Lord’s favorite dragon is constipated. Dr. James DeGrande, veterinarian and orc-slayer, is going to have to deal with it.

This one could get messy.

Everyone says it was better in the Good Old Days. Before the Dark Lord covered the land in His Second Darkness.

As far as I can tell, it wasn’t that much better. Even then, everyone cheered the heroes who rode unicorns into combat against dragons, but no one ever remembered who treated the unicorns’ phosphine burns afterward. Of course, that was when dragons were something to be killed. Today I have to save one. Know what fewmets are? No? Then make a sacrifice of thanks right now to whatever gods you worship, because today I have to figure a way to get them flowing back out of the Dark Lord’s favorite dragon. Yeah, from the other end. And that’s just my most illustrious client. I’ve got orcs and trolls who might eat me and dark elf barons who might sue me if their bloodhawks and chimeras don’t pull through. And that doesn’t even consider the possibility that the old bag with the basilisk might show up.

The only thing that’s gone right this evening is finding Harriet to be my veterinary assistant. She’s almost a witch, which just might save us both. If we don’t get each other killed first.
