Secret Stairs: The Refuge

Today is the day when the massive Secret Stairs anthology went live from Silver Empire Press. It’s only 99c through Saturday so hurry up and snag it while it’s cheap.

I have a story in it called the Refuge. People seem to like it. From Amazon reviews:

“…let me single out two pieces for the quality of the imagination they reflect and the excellence of the writers.

The first is Dawn Witzke’s “The Refuge.” The story reflects its title perfectly: the staircase is a haven rather than a horror, a place the narrator finds safety, transcendence and love. It’s a tale told with passion and skill, and it resolves beautifully.”

“The Refuge – An emotional story, a hard read for me. Well written”

When I began writing the Refuge, I only had a snippet of an idea. The stairs would bring stories to life. I had no idea why or how, but that was my story. I pictured a young girl sitting on the bottom step with a book open on her lap. From there, my character told me her story of abuse and heartache, but also of hope and love.

I hadn’t intended to, but the story turned into a present story and a past story that converge at the end to go off together to live happily ever after…or not. There is a bit of a twist at the end that you may or may not see coming.

If you like emotion driven stories, you’ll probably like it.

The story also leaves room for a sequel, which I might write just to see where she ends up. We’ll see how much time I have to work on it.
