I’ve seen the first episode. My recommendation: Don’t watch it with kids.
That was one of the most frightening things I’ve ever experienced on TV or screen. Which is a MAJOR compliment! The episode ramps up the creepiness as we get further and further in, until you think we’ve reached the conclusion. And then…
I won’t spoil it, but my hands are still shaking. What an ending!
The whole thing is extremely noir, to the point where they overdo it slightly with the voiceovers, but this is a minor blemish.
About the extremely explicit sex scene everybody is buzzing over: It felt random and didn’t fit the tone (Isn’t noir a more fade to black sort of deal?), but without it besides-themselves critics couldn’t gush about how Jessica “Takes control of her sexuality”, as if that had anything to do with the quality of the episode (it doesn’t), so there you go.
Ditto with the lesbians. They’re there. I guess if you think just being there is a victory, all right, but I found it somewhere between “meh” and “sort of distracting”. Their foreplay was…a little awkward. Still, I guess your mileage may vary.
Overall consensus of episode 1: Not quite as good as Daredevil’s pilot, with it’s terrific fight choreography and strong moral undertones, as well as some really rich cinematography, this is nevertheless a VERY strong first episode. If the show can keep up this level of atmosphere, I anticipate a lot of sleepless nights. Man, I’m still shivering. Main Street, Birch Street, Higgins Drive…
