Significant SFWA qualification changes

SFWA has recently, (based on a vote of 1/3 of the members 86% approving), drastically reduced the requirements for associate and active membership.  SFWA will also accept self published and small press works based on payment.  This all starts March first this year.

Based on an e-mail  basically these are the new requirements:

Portions of the informational release are excerpted below:

…approved bylaw changes that enable SFWA to accept self-publication and small-press credits for Active and Associate memberships in the organization. We are using existing levels of income but are now allowing a combination of advances and income earned in a 12 month period to reach the qualifying amounts….

…Specific details will be posted at by the first of March, but the basic standards are $3,000 for novel, or a total of 10,000 words of short fiction paid at 6 cents a word for Active membership. A single story of at least 1,000 words paid at 6 cents a word will be required for Associate membership…

This raises the payment standard to six cents from five and removes most circulation and pre-certification requirements for markets.

SFWA now has 1,800 active members and I am sure this will bring many many more to my organisation.
